A Crazy Discovery About Starfish
There’s more to the humble starfish than you might expect.
Scientists found that deep-sea starfish have compound eyes on the tips of their arms, like some of their counterparts who live on the shore, according to this study by The Royal Society.
It’s thought that the sea creatures navigate their environment using their sense of smell, but apparently, they use their arm-eyes to see all around them, too. The eyes are located on the bottom side of the arms, so the creatures would need to bend to see their target, according to the researchers.
The team discovered two of the starfish species studied were bioluminescent, meaning they were able to emit flashes of light, perhaps suggesting that the creatures communicate through light.
